Travel Vaccinations

Which vaccinations do I need?

Please consider your travel vaccinations at least 8 weeks before you are due to travel as some vaccinations need to be given well in advance in order to be effective.

The following website provides information about which vaccinations are advisable in different areas of the world:

www.travelhealthpro.org.uk

If you think you may need an NHS vaccination please use the above website to fill in the Practice’s travel risk assessment form and return to the Practice.

We can give you a print out of your immunisations history for information if you need to check what vaccinations you have had in the past.

Travelling Abroad with Medication

The advice below is taken from www.gov.uk  :

You need to prove your medication is prescribed to you if;

  • It containes a “controlled drug”
  • You have it on you when you’re entering or leaving the UK.

You could get a fine or got to prison if you travel with medicine that is illegal in another country – check with the Embassy of the country you’re going to before you travel.

It is your responsibility to establish the rules for your destination, airline and any country you are travelling through.  These may all be different!  Please check your prescribed and any over the counter medications you are taking.

The Practice can provide a “Letter to carry abroad” for your prescribed medication which is signed by a GP.  You will need to request this at least 3 weeks before you travel.  There is charge for this non-NHS work of £70.00.

Well Person

These check-ups are for adults who may not have seen their doctor for several years. Check if you need to be seen by phoning Pendeen Surgery on 01989 763535 and make an appointment for a Well Person clinic with a Practice Nurse.

The check includes relevant family and personal medical history, life-style enquiry, blood pressure, height and weight (to work out BMI – Body Mass Index), urine analysis (bring a sample). A blood sample for cholesterol may be taken if the check-up suggests it is necessary.

A similar check-up is offered to all patients new to Pendeen Surgery – a New Patient health Check. The practice Nurse will give health advice based on the check-up.

Vaccination Schedule

Click Here for a checklist of the vaccines that are routinely offered to everyone in the UK for free on the NHS, and the ages at which they should ideally be given.

If you’re not sure whether you or your child have had all your routine vaccinations, ask your GP or practice nurse to find out for you. It may be possible to catch up later in life.

Try to have your vaccinations delivered on time to ensure protection. If you’re going to be away from the GP surgery when a vaccination is due, talk to your doctor. It may be possible to arrange to have the vaccination at a different location.

Cervical Smear Tests

The Health Authority runs a Cervical Smear call and re-call scheme. Women will receive a letter when their smear is due. Women are routinely called at aged 25 then at 3 year intervals until aged 49 then 5 yearly until the age of 64 when call-up ceases.

Results are posted to the patient and take up to 6 weeks to arrive. If no letter comes by then please phone the surgery.

Influenza Immunisation – Flu Jabs

The flu virus changes over time. A new and unique immunisation is produced each year. We place an order in January and they are delivered in October. We therefore offer flu jabs from mid-October to December. The groups that are recommended for immunisation every year now include:

  • Everyone over 65
  • Chronic chest disease including asthma if on regular inhaled steroids
  • Chronic heart disease including Ischaemic Heart Disease
  • Chronic renal or liver disease
  • Diabetics
  • Pregnant women
  • Everyone in long-stay residential care
  • The main carer of an elderly or disabled person

Phone Pendeen Surgery on 01989 763535 from mid-September onwards and make an appointment for one of our Flu Clinics. Some are held on a Saturday.

Pneumococcal Immunisation to help prevent certain types of chest infection can be given at the same time but is only needed once in a lifetime. Ask for it only if you have never had it before and keep a note of having had it.

Contraception & Sexual Health

All our doctors are able to offer contraceptive and sexual health advice.

In Herefordshire sexual health services are provided by  Sexual Health Services 4 Hereford.  They offer both contraceptive and sexual health advice, and  free home testing kits.

Sexual Health Services 4 Hereford, 15 St Owen’s St, Hereford HR1 2J.  Please telephone for appointments on 01432 483693.  Note – Males must not pass urine for at least 1 hour before attending the service.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a serious life-long condition with the potential for important long-term complications. These can be kept to a minimum by careful control. All our diabetic patients are on a register and will be contacted about six months after their birthday to make an appointment with the HCA for a blood test, blood pressure, and a foot check, and a then Diabetes Clinic appointment  with Alison Holmes (our Diabetes Specialist Nurse).  Please bring your spectacles (if you wear any) to your appointment as your vision will be checked, along with a sample of urine and your test record book.

Child Health

All babies are issued with a Red Book. This lists all the regular check-ups a child needs, sets out a schedule for immunisations, gives advice on normal development and provides space to record all this information. It should be brought to all consultations in case it needs to be referred to or an entry made.

Our Child health Clinic is held by our Practice Nurse who will give the immunisations and a doctor is available should further advice be needed.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular Disease includes angina, heart attack, Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), Cerebrovascular Disease (CVD – stroke), Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD – claudication) and a few other conditions affecting the heart and circulation.

Patients with these diseases are on a register and are seen twice year – once near their birthday and then again six months later by the Practice Nurse or Healthcare Assistance (HCA).

Patients on the register will received a call-up notification to make an appointment with the Practice Nurse or HCA for their CVD review.  The review includes checking your recent blood results for liver function, kidney function, and blood fat levels including cholesterol.

So that the results are available to be discussed at the appointment you may be asked to attend for a blood test with our Phlebotomist a week before.

Asthma

All our asthma patients are on a register. Those who are on regular treatment should be seen twice a year – by their GP near their birthday and by our specially trained nurses, six months later.

Those on the register and on regular treatment will receive a call-up letter and should attend one of the Asthma Clinics.
